North Western Softball Team Takes 1990 City Industrial Championship

The North Western's 16-inch softball team, consisting of employees from One North Western Center, recently captured the city-wide industrial league championship.

The team has a long history with the railroad since a few of the current members have played on the team since 1962.  This year's team is indebted to vice president-Systems and Information Services Ed Lillig for his generous sponsorship of the squad.

The team finished first in league play after winning all but one regular season game thanks to the outstanding hitting and fielding of Bob Madsen, Labor Relations, and Marvin Long, Systems and Information Services.

In the opening game of the tournament, they defeated American National Bank 17-0.  Next, the team shut out S&C Electric Co. 6-0 on the pitching strength of team manager Joe Umana, Network Control, coupled with great defense by Wally Friese, Freight Division Accounting, and the hitting of Jim Hallgren, Internal Auditing.  In the third game, Tim O'Brien, Credit & Collections, drove in the winning run in a 14-13 battle against the United States Postal Service, and then scored the winning run on Joe Umana's hit in a 12-11 extra-inning victory over Newark Electronics in the fourth game.

During the championship game, the clutch hitting of Paul Blazek, Customer Accounting, combined with an overall tremendous team effort, enabled the North Western team to defeat the Postal Service 11-6.  Congratulations to all team members for an outstanding season!    (From the September/October 1990 issue of the North Western Dispatch.)

Softball Titlist

Sparked by several area players, the Chicago arid North Western Transportation Co. emerged as the city wide Industrial League champions in a recent Thillens Stadium tournament.

The champions defeated American National Bank 17-0 in the opener, then blanked S. & C. Electrics Co. 6-0 on the strength of manager Joe Umana’s pitching and North Center resident Jim Hallgern’s hitting.

Irving Park resident Tim O'Brien drove in the winning run in a 14-13 slugfest against the United Parcel Service, then scored the winning run on Umana’s hit in a 12-11 victory over Newark Electronics.

Chicago & North Western avenged a defeat in the Postal Service by winning the title 11-6 on a clutch hitting of Ravenswood resident Paul Blazek.  (From The Lerner Booster, September 18, 1990)
