On June 8, 1949, Peninsula Division Engineer Edward A. Cox brought No. 214, The Peninsula 400, into the Escanaba, MI depot and was met by a delegation there to present him with a 50 Year Service Pin.  Ed hired out as a Fireman on June 9, 1900 and was promoted to Engineer on June 3, 1903.   Above, on the right, Superintendent T.M. Cassidy presents Ed with his service pin and a congratulatory letter.  Participating in the presentation were local Veterans’ Association officials: President W.J. Leppla, Train Dispatcher, Vice-President G.W. Walter, Ore Accountant and Secretary-Treasurer Roger J. Moras, Chief Train Dispatcher.  Also present were G.M. Anderson, Road Forman of Engines, C.C. Robinson, General Foreman and J.J. Bulger, Trainmaster.  Donald Cox of Las Vegas, NV sent us these and the two pictures below.  Thanks, Don!  -    12/27/11

 

On the left is Clyde Cox taken at Proviso Yards in 1950.  He retired as a Yardmaster, Proviso Yard One, in 1984.  The man on the right is unidentified.

 

 

Madison Division Engineer Charles H. Thiede in the cab of his Class E-S engine just prior to starting his last round trip, Madison to Chicago & return, on Saturday, 11/29/1947.  This is probably Train No. 508.  In the right hand photograph are W.B. Paulus, Traveling Engineer, Mr. Thiede, Conductor John Brody of Harvard, IL & Train Master A.L. Eckles.  Mr. Thiede, a resident of Madison, WI, retired with 41 years of service.  These and the three photos below are courtesy of the Wisconsin State Historical Society.    

Conductor James M. LaValle of Winona, MN, the No. 1 man on the Madison Division Conductor’s Seniority Roster at this time.  Taken at Madison on 06/10/1935.

Albert F. Kniebusch being honored 11/01/1946 for his 54 years of service with the C&NW Ry.  Also shown, (l. to r.), are H.W. Blum, transportation manager of Oscar Mayer & Co.; H.C. Kniebusch, Albert's son & an industrial engineer for the Wabash-St. Louis R.R.; S.L. Foote, Oscar Mayer general traffic manager; and W.S. Alcumbrac, Madison Division superintendent for the C&NW Ry.  Mr. Kniebusch was Agent at Madison, WI for many years.

It’s late at night at South Janesville, WI in 1955 and 3rd trick Operator Clarence Nelson, father of Mark and Mike Nelson, repeats the Form 19 order he's just copied.  Mr. Nelson hired on the C&NW in 1929 as Agent at Cuba City, WI.  Later in his career he worked at South Janesville and Woodstock.
