Here are several
photos from the 1970’s and 1980’s. The
first 5 are from Dave Hawley and the
last two from R.J. DeBerg.

A “happy” C&NW F-7 at Waukegan, IL in 1979. |
An
unusual picture - unusual because the three units on this train are all from
different builders. The first unit is
an EMD, second unit is an Alco and the third is a General Electric. The C&NW only had 6 GE’s and 30 Alco
C-628’s, making this a rare combination.

These
two pictures show what happened on the morning of March 18, 1971 when two
scoundrels, one a former C&NW employee, got on the 1647 at Crystal Lake
and took it for a joy ride up the Lake Geneva Branch. Somewhere along the line, the perpetrators
got off the engine and let it run unattended towards Lake Geneva. At about 4:00 am, it collided head-on with
the 5032A, which was on an 11 car commuter train waiting for its morning
departure. Damage was estimated at in
excess of $300,000. One man, a railway
company employee on the commuter train, was slightly injured. The
wreckage blocked the tracks at Lake Geneva and prevented the other commuter
train from leaving. Approximately 250
people were bused to Crystal Lake where they took other trains to
Chicago. During the evening rush hour,
trains terminated at McHenry, Illinois and about 100 people were bused to
destinations further north |
