On Sunday, July 21 2013, the annual C&NW Veterans luncheon was held by the Kenosha/Waukegan Chapter of the association. It was held at Big Ed’s Bar and Grill in downtown Waukegan. This is the first time the chapter held a luncheon in a restaurant as in the past it was held outside as a picnic. . We had 21 people registered to attend and 20 attendees. Of the attendees 12 were members and 8 were guest. Only five of the attendees were from the Kenosha/Waukegan area, the rest from Milwaukee, Madison and Harvard/Crystal Lake area. It was felt by Vice President Dick Moseler and myself that with such low participation from the Kenosha/Waukegan area that the chapter be deactivated. Finding a place that will hold a luncheon for so few is very difficult and costly. As no one else wanted our jobs, we simply resigned and the chapter became inactive.

That’s enough of the bad news. We decided that if we were going out, we’d go out with one hell of a party. There was still money in the treasury so we gave everyone that registered for the luncheon their checks back. After paying for the meal and gratuity for 21 people we still had money left so we also had an open bar. We managed to drink up the balance in about an hour and a half. The meal of tossed salad, pulled pork, meat balls, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and peach cobbler was next. It was served family style and there was plenty for all. There were no complaints about the food, Big Ed is a whizz in the kitchen. His wife Kim and business partners Rhonda and Katy were the servers. They are usually closed on Sunday, and they all came to work on their only day off just for us. We can’t thank them enough.  Following the meal was the business meeting. You already know what happened there. I’d brought by guitar for old time sake and sang a few songs. The new one I taught myself, “Senior Moments”, was a big hit. I guess everyone could relate to it. I’m surprised I remembered the words.  (All 5 verses) Everyone got a raffle ticket with their registration and we raffled off the few things we had left from last year and a few things brought by attendees. Bob Stewart took some pictures of the group and we adjourned.

Thanks to everyone for their support over the years.
